When Do You Need a Web Designer?
I’ve been asked why people need web designers when there are so many website builders out there that anyone can learn and use.
The truth is you don’t need to hire a web designer. You can do it yourself!
You may have already built a business website or two, and you even have enough technical acumen to keep it up. You are a doer and you realize that you need a website if you own or run a business.
A lot of what we do as web designers can be learned. Business owners have unlimited resources available to create their own websites. There are content management systems that are intuitive and easy to learn. You can find online courses out there like Lynda, Skillshare, and even YouTube. In fact, my degree program utilized Lynda.com for a lot of practical skill building. When attending an online school, you are basically self taught anyway and the video learning format becomes your preferred way to learn. It’s quick and effective.
Currently, I am obsessed with Skillshare and spend a lot of free time geeking out on their courses. My class wish list is a mile long- from technical development topics to user experience design, digital marketing, SEO, copywriting, blogging, entrepreneurship, etc. It is also a great site for creatives to find courses on just about anything.
When diving into technology and design, there is no end to learning. So why did I go back to school to learn all of this web design stuff if anyone can do it? That’s easy. Anyone can learn how to create a website, but not everybody wants to.
Typically, the clients that come to me are too busy working their businesses and don’t have the time to dedicate to building a website.
That’s when you need a web designer.
You Might Need a Web Designer When...
1. You’re not technical.
At all. You know how to create, open, save and send documents. You know how to do email. But that’s about it. Internet technology changes rapidly, almost daily. Using a professional designer ensures that you are getting a website using the latest technology and design trends.
2. You have a website, but it looks like its 1999.
You’re embarrassed to even send potential clients to your site. The truth is, if your website is lacking and out of date, no one wants to look at it anyway. Your website should be professional, current, and mobile friendly with the ability to convert visitors to customers. If you are not using your website as a sales and marketing power tool- you probably need a web designer.
3. You need a custom web design but don’t know where to start.
A professional designer employs a design process in order to achieve results. The designer will take a look at your whole business to customize a website that will help you accomplish your business goals. A designer knows how to plan a project and work to execute the design and give you the functionality that you need.
4. You don’t have the time to dedicate to regular maintenance.
It is important to know that websites are never done. A website requires maintenance, plugin updates, theme updates, content updates, and more. If you create your own site, make sure you are using a hosting provider that manages all of these things for you so that you don’t have to.
5. You have no design sense.
You know what you want, but not a lot of in choosing design assets and all the things that make it look pretty. And it needs to look pretty. If you don’t care that it looks pretty, then you don’t need a designer. You need to delegate this project to someone else who does care about how your website looks! Enough said.

Find a designer you want to work with
Web designers come in all shapes and sizes. Some designers just design. Others design and build, and some even help you will most things related to your project like copywriting, branding and more.
Don’t just talk to one agency or one designer. Spend some time talking with a few of them and find someone you actually want to work with. Get to know their capabilities and what they bring to the table.
Your website is that important to your business.
Your designer should not only care about your project, but should also care about getting you results. Hopefully he or she listens and tries to understand the ins and outs of your business and your goals for your website.
I know that your website project can be overwhelming, even a major pain point in your business. It is my goal here on our blog to share resources and guidance for your website project. There is always more to learn about creating and running a website- whether you are a do-it-yourselfer or not.
You just need to know that you can create and run your own professional looking website. But if you need help- it’s out there!
